Description

Easy, saucy BBQ chicken that braises in its own juices, delivering tender and flavorful meat in just about 45 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (about 1.52 pounds)
  • 4 cloves fresh garlic, minced
  • 1 cup BBQ sauce
  • 1 medium yellow onion, chopped
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Spray the Dutch oven with nonstick cooking spray or rub lightly with oil.
  2. Pat chicken breasts dry and season both sides with salt and pepper.
  3. Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in the Dutch oven over medium-high heat until shimmering.
  4. Add the chicken and sear 4–5 minutes per side until golden brown; remove chicken briefly to a plate.
  5. Add chopped onions to the pot and cook 3–4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened. Add minced garlic in the last 30 seconds.
  6. Whisk together 1 cup BBQ sauce, 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, and 2 tablespoons brown sugar in a small bowl.
  7. Return chicken to the Dutch oven, nestling breasts among the onions. Pour the BBQ mixture over the chicken.
  8. Cover and bake for 30–35 minutes until chicken reaches 165°F (75°C). Let rest 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

For a thicker glaze, remove the lid for the last 5–8 minutes of baking. Always ensure chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).
