Description

A delightful make-ahead breakfast dish featuring brioche or challah bread soaked in a creamy custard and baked until golden.

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf of bread (preferably brioche or challah)
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Maple syrup for serving
  • Powdered sugar for serving
  • Fresh berries for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish thoroughly.
  3. Cut the bread into cubes and spread them evenly in the dish.
  4. Whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt in a large bowl until well combined.
  5. Pour the egg mixture over the bread cubes, ensuring every piece is soaked.
  6. Cover your dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
  7. The next morning, remove the plastic wrap and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and set in the middle.
  8. Serve warm with a drizzle of maple syrup, a dusting of powdered sugar, and optional fresh berries for a burst of color.

Notes

For a dairy-free version, consider using almond milk and a sugar substitute for a low-sugar alternative.
