Description
A creamy and rich Southern-style white gravy perfect for biscuits and more.
Ingredients
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 cups milk
- Salt, to taste
- Freshly cracked black pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Heat a medium saucepan over medium heat and melt the butter completely, ensuring it doesn’t brown.
- Whisk in the flour to form a roux, cooking for about 1 minute until it becomes bubbly, and the raw flour smell dissipates.
- Gradually add the milk while continuously whisking to prevent any lumps.
- Continue cooking, whisking frequently until the gravy thickens and can coat the back of a spoon—this should take about 2 to 4 minutes. If it’s too thick, simply whisk in a splash of milk.
- Season your gravy with salt and a generous amount of freshly cracked black pepper.
- Serve immediately over warm biscuits for the ultimate comfort dish.
Notes
For a lighter version, substitute butter with olive oil or a dairy-free alternative. Can add a pinch of garlic powder or cayenne for extra flavor.
