Description

A classic comfort food featuring soft, juicy patties served with rich gravy and tender onions, perfect for busy weeknights or family gatherings.

Ingredients

  • pounds ground beef (80/20 blend recommended)
  • ½ cup Italian breadcrumbs
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 2 teaspoons dry mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 beef bouillon cube, crushed
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 cups hot water
  • 2 additional beef bouillon cubes
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 4 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 1 medium yellow onion, sliced
  • 2 teaspoons minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 8 ounces cremini mushrooms, sliced (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix the ground beef, breadcrumbs, ketchup, dry mustard, Worcestershire sauce, crushed bouillon cube, onion powder, salt, and black pepper until well combined. Form into patties.
  2. Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for 5-7 minutes on each side until browned and cooked through, reaching an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C). Remove them from the skillet and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and mushrooms. Sauté until softened, about 4-5 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
  4. Pour in the hot water, adding the additional beef bouillon cubes, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and seasonings. Stir to combine.
  5. In a small bowl, whisk the cornstarch with a little water to create a slurry. Add this to the gravy mixture and simmer until thickened, about 3 minutes.
  6. Return the patties to the skillet, making sure they’re coated in gravy. Let them simmer together for 3-5 minutes to meld the flavors.
  7. Serve immediately, ensuring each patty is topped with a generous amount of gravy and onions.

Notes

For a lighter option, substitute ground turkey or chicken. Fresh herbs like thyme or parsley can enhance the flavor of the gravy.
