Description
A classic comfort food featuring soft, juicy patties served with rich gravy and tender onions, perfect for busy weeknights or family gatherings.
Ingredients
- 1½ pounds ground beef (80/20 blend recommended)
- ½ cup Italian breadcrumbs
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 2 teaspoons dry mustard
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 beef bouillon cube, crushed
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 cups hot water
- 2 additional beef bouillon cubes
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- 4 teaspoons cornstarch
- 1 medium yellow onion, sliced
- 2 teaspoons minced garlic
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 8 ounces cremini mushrooms, sliced (optional)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix the ground beef, breadcrumbs, ketchup, dry mustard, Worcestershire sauce, crushed bouillon cube, onion powder, salt, and black pepper until well combined. Form into patties.
- Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for 5-7 minutes on each side until browned and cooked through, reaching an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C). Remove them from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and mushrooms. Sauté until softened, about 4-5 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
- Pour in the hot water, adding the additional beef bouillon cubes, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and seasonings. Stir to combine.
- In a small bowl, whisk the cornstarch with a little water to create a slurry. Add this to the gravy mixture and simmer until thickened, about 3 minutes.
- Return the patties to the skillet, making sure they’re coated in gravy. Let them simmer together for 3-5 minutes to meld the flavors.
- Serve immediately, ensuring each patty is topped with a generous amount of gravy and onions.
Notes
For a lighter option, substitute ground turkey or chicken. Fresh herbs like thyme or parsley can enhance the flavor of the gravy.
