Description

A delicious patty melt featuring juicy burgers, gooey cheese, and caramelized onions, served with a tasty secret sauce.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 4 slices of rye or wheat bread
  • 4 slices of American or Swiss cheese
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • For the secret sauce:
    • Mayonnaise
    • Ketchup
    • Pickle relish

Instructions

  1. In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the sliced onion and sauté until caramelized, about 10 minutes. Set aside.
  2. Form the ground beef into 4 patties, seasoning each with salt and pepper. Cook in the same skillet until browned, approximately 4 minutes per side.
  3. On one slice of bread, layer a burger patty, a slice of cheese, and caramelized onions, then top with another slice of bread.
  4. Butter the exterior of the sandwich and cook in the skillet until golden brown and the cheese has melted, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  5. For the secret sauce, mix mayonnaise, ketchup, and pickle relish in a small bowl. Serve the patty melt hot with the sauce on the side.

Notes

For extra flavor, add Worcestershire sauce to the ground beef. Consider mixing in cooked bacon or jalapeños for a spicy kick.
