Description

A savory take on the classic Sloppy Joe featuring ground beef, caramelized onions, and melted Swiss cheese.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef (85% lean)
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (optional for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring frequently, for about 10-12 minutes until they are golden and caramelized.
  3. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  4. Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it apart with a spatula. Cook until fully browned, which should take about 5-7 minutes.
  5. Drain any excess fat, then mix in Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Allow it to simmer for about 5 minutes to blend the flavors.
  6. Toast the hamburger buns until golden.
  7. Scoop the beef mixture onto the bottom half of each bun, top with shredded Swiss cheese, and place on the top bun.
  8. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired!

Notes

For a lighter option, swap ground beef for ground turkey or plant-based meat. Serve open-faced on toasted baguette slices for a fun appetizer.
