Description
A comforting casserole with layers of ground beef, thinly sliced russet potatoes, and a creamy sauce topped with melted cheese.
Ingredients
- 1 ½ lbs ground beef (or ground turkey)
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 5 – 6 medium russet potatoes, thinly sliced (about 1/8 inch)
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (divided)
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella (optional)
- 1 10.5 oz can cream of mushroom soup (or cream of chicken)
- 1 cup milk
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp paprika (optional)
- 1 tbsp olive oil or butter (for greasing dish)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with olive oil or butter.
- In a skillet, brown the ground beef with the chopped onion until fully cooked, then drain any excess fat. Add in the minced garlic, salt, pepper, and paprika.
- In a bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup and the milk until smooth.
- Layer half of the sliced potatoes at the bottom of the greased baking dish.
- Spread half of the beef mixture over the potatoes, followed by half of the sauce. Top with 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese.
- Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes, beef mixture, and sauce. Finish with the rest of the cheddar and mozzarella.
- Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Then remove the foil and bake uncovered for 15–20 minutes until the potatoes are tender and the cheese is bubbly and golden.
- Allow to rest for about 5 minutes before serving.
Notes
This dish pairs wonderfully with a green salad or steamed vegetables. Sprinkle fresh herbs or add a dollop of sour cream for added flavor.
