Description

A gooey, nostalgic casserole combining the flavors of cheeseburgers and fries for a weeknight crowd-pleaser.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (85–90% lean)
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cups frozen French fries (shoestring or crinkle-cut)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (sharp cheddar recommended)
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) condensed cheddar cheese soup
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon mustard (Dijon or yellow)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×9-inch casserole dish.
  2. Heat a skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and diced onion. Cook, breaking up the meat, until browned and onions are translucent (about 6–8 minutes). Season with salt and pepper. Drain excess fat.
  3. Transfer the meat and onions to a large bowl. Stir in the condensed cheddar cheese soup, milk, and mustard until evenly combined. Taste and adjust seasoning.
  4. Layer half of the frozen French fries in the bottom of the greased casserole dish. Spread the beef mixture over the fries in an even layer, then top with the remaining fries.
  5. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar evenly over the top.
  6. Bake for 25–30 minutes, until the fries are cooked through and cheese is bubbly and golden. If desired, place under the broiler for 1–2 minutes for extra browning. Let rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

For a saucier casserole, add up to 1/4 cup extra milk. Use thawed or par-cooked fries for a crisper top.
